Sysna: /* Oxfords and Derbies */

Foreword
Shoes are the cornerstone of every outfit. Shoes are the most abused pieces in your wardrobe by default. Shoes say everything. You can wear the finest tops and jeans by whomever but it will be worth nothing if you run around in a cheap pair of walmart sandals. Enjoy wear and tear in moderation. There is a difference between signs of age and just looking like shit. More expensive shoes/materials usually age better. Try to avoid shoes from fast-fashion stores.

General Types and Styles of Shoes
Oxfords and Derbies
The two most common styles of men's dress shoes, the oxford and derby are distinguished by their "lacing type," or how the eyelet tabs are stitched in relation to the vamp. Oxfords (variations of which include Balmorals and Adelaides) feature a "closed lacing" style in which the eyelet tabs are stitched underneath the vamp. Derbies (such as Bucks, Derbies, and Bluchers) feature an "open lacing" style in which the tabs are stitched on top of the vamp (see picture for details). In general, derbies are considered more casual and oxfords more formal.

Other Styles
<p style="margin-top:0.4em;margin-bottom:0.5em;">Loafers and Boat Shoes</p>

: Low cut shoes with no or largely nonfunctional laces and typically a moc toe construction. Generally considered more casual than a laced shoe.

Chukka

: An ankle length boot with two or three pairs of eyelets. Worn casually, desert boots are a popular style of chukka.

Monk Strap

: A style of laceless shoe closed with one or two straps and buckles. A monk shoe with two straps may be refered to as a "double monk."

Embellishments
Brogues

: Any shoe or boot with broguing--small decorative perforations, often along with serrations along the visible edges (e.g. along the throat line, toe cap, and tongue). A shoe can simultaneously be an oxford (or derby) and a pair of "brogues". Due to the functional purpose of broguing, brogues were originally considered a casual <span style="font-size:13px;line-height:21px;">shoe, but this is no longer true. Brogueing can be found on both casual and formal shoes.</span>

: Additionally, there are different terms for the extent and style of broguing: the popular <span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:sans-serif;font-size:12.800000190734863px;line-height:19.200000762939453px;">full brogue (or wingtip), semi-brogue, quarter brogue, as well as the longwing style.</span>
Cap Toe

: A shoe with an extra layer of material covering the toe of the shoe. There are different styles of toe caps, but generally when a shoe is refered to as "cap toed" it will be a simple cap like the one shown to the right. A toe cap can be found on any type of shoe from dress shoes, to boots, and even sneakers.

Moc Toe
: Short for <span style="color:rgb(68,68,68);font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:small;line-height:12.800000190734863px;">moccasin</span><span style="color:rgb(68,68,68);font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:small;line-height:12.800000190734863px;"> toe, a construction wherein visible seams run along the toe box of a shoe.</span>

Oxfords (also called Balmorals) feature a "closed lacing" style in which the eyelet tabs are stitched underneath the vamp. Derbies (also called Bucks, Gibsons, or Bluchers) feature an "open lacing" style in which the tabs are stitched on top of the vamp (see picture for details).

I added this section because of a disagreement between two editors over Rancourt's quality. In my opinion, the brand is most comparable to made in the USA brands like Oak Street Bootmakers. From this perspective, Rancourt does a very comparable shoe, and the roughness of the overall look is not only normal but also part of the appeal. This isn't the same opinion you might have if you're comparing them to Allen Edmonds, where in comparison Rancourt's shoes look like they haven't been made with quite the same attention to detail and finishing, as noted above. I don't see it that way; I think Rancourt does a great job at making the kinds of shoes they make, which is a different aesthetic. From the perspective of a more sartorial style, Rancourt's shoes will fall short of the competition in a few important aspects. I don't think this should be a knock against the brand, but that's because I'd be looking for different things in a shoe, I think.

Sysna
I'm personally a fan of Rancourt. Customer service, fit, quality of construction, and pricing are all top-notch. My main problem with the brand is that they charge $50 for any custom order, even though they ostensibly make every single pair of shoes to order anyway. Want a different sole, leather, and stitching from a stock shoe? $50. Want one shoe to be half a size smaller than the other? $50. This is a fairly minor gripe since the shoes are so cheap to begin with, but it's worth noting.
I've said before that the finishing on Rancourt's shoes is lacking, but that was mostly me being overly critical.

Please keep them alphabetized.
Mall Tier / Fast Fashion
(Good for basics; t-shirts, underwear, socks, etc.)

*American Apparel Has basic t-shirts in a variety of cuts. Tees fit well even for slimmer people.

*American Eagle

*Aldo Shoes Shoes will fall apart within a month. Only buy on SALE.

*Asos For the home brand quality can be variable, although as the price entails it usually isn't the best however some items do look and fit well. They also have a great and easy returns policy making it easy to try out clothes. The site also offers items from higher tier brands. Has sales on quite frequently.

*Cotton On Dirt cheap basics (<$10); great sales. It can be hard to find good fits here, but the upside is that you won't have wasted a lot of money if you decide you don't like something.

*H&M Recommended for very basic pieces and occasionally more stylish pieces, terrible quality, don't buy shoes from them.

*I Heart Yours Sells very basic, inexpensive shoes.

*Express Good for better fitting dress clothes. Brown people (Indians, Hispanics, Brazilians, etc) love it alot for some reason.

*Forever 21 Has a fuckton of items in many eclectic styles, but quality is sometimes dubious. Best to use for experimenting with styles without shelling out too much money.

*Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic

*JCPenney Good place to nab Levi's jeans if you cannot find an outlet

*Macy's

*Pull & Bear Similar to H&M, but more colourful.

*Ralph Lauren

*River Island Extremely similar to topman.

*Target The Mossimo athletic fit t-shirts are decent and the Merona line is a good way to fill up a new white collar worker's wardrobe on a budget with some tailoring. If you can find what you need on the clearance racks and do your own alterations, it is very good value.

*Topman Similar to ASOS it tends to be hit and miss, however they do have a good returns policy and if you avoid the typical 'lad' items (usually t-shirts with pop culture references) and it should be decent. Their Stretch skinny jeans and chinos stretch out quite a bit. Suits and blazers are great looking especially considering the price.

*Urban Outfitters

*Zara

*YD Pretty low quality but useful if you are looking for small sizes.

Low Tier
*Cos

*Everlane Their tees are generally well liked and they claim to offer the same quality as more expensive brands but with less markup.

*Frank & Oak Good quality Menswear basics for around the same prices as Uniqlo. I wouldn't recommend them for taller guys, as everything seems to run a bit short. Free shipping.

*J. Crew Good quality clothes with acceptable cuts. High-ish price for the quality they offer Citation needed

*Karmaloop Has sales literally almost every day. Can sometimes find entry-level designer brands (e.g. Naked and Famous) at deep discount.

*Levi Large selection of jeans (among other things) in a variety of colors and cuts. The quality is beginner level in their cheaper jeans not made in the USA. Levi's often has sales, so avoid buying at full retail. Avoid if you live outside NA, ridiculous markups. You may find defected Levi's jeans at Marshalls or TJ Maxx at deep discount (~$30).

*Uniqlo Above average quality basics, recommended for entry level.

*"though finishing and attention to detail is somewhat lacking." on Rancourt's page: compared to what? Just looking for clarification on this point

*as for the addition of price information on custom orders, thanks for adding that

Compared to say, Allen Edmonds. I have a pair of their loafers, and the edges of the sole leather were unfinished. The insole is glued on and stuffed with cardboard, and the stitching on the strap is ugly. Overall they're very well made, though.

*Well the edit sounds very vague on the page, and gives the impression that they're sloppy with their shoemaking. It doesn't seem right to compare them to Allen Edmonds, though I'll admit the two are closely related. Their competitors right now seem to be the other USA moccasin stitch shoemakers like Oak Street Bootmakers, not so much Allen Edmonds; the look of a Rancourt shoe is rough-around-the-edges but tough and comfortable, and Allen Edmonds goes for the perfection look. So while I think that difference can be worked into the page, it seems wrong, to me, to put it down as just a flaw.

*Fair enough, feel free to change it if you want.

*Figuring out how we're going to fit different opinions onto the same page is going to be part of figuring out how this wiki is going to work, and I think we can do it. Maybe for now we should have a "different opinions" section, where different editors (under the subheading of their account name) put down their perspective on the shoes.
<br />
i feel that may lead to over-reviewing to spam names on wikis - guy

*unfortunately I don't see an alternative. being anonymous on the wiki will just be sort of non-transparent about who is posting what. and if we don't have a section like that for differing opinions, then we'll have to either battle to have our opinion dominate on the page itself, or be completely objective, which would be pointless.

We could just assume a neutral point of view and allow users to have reviews on their userpages/pages FOR reviews. Right now the reviews are way too integrated into the articles themselves - guy

*what's the point of the articles without opinions though? if we don't have opinions in the articles, then why wouldn't people just read wikipedia? I don't see what would be accomplished by doing it that way

*as for pages dedicated to reviews, if they're anchored to the page, maybe. if some pages get too large they may need a separate opinions page. but at the tiny length of all the pages we have right now, I don't think there is any urgent need for that.

we could just link to opinion pages for the respected brands. I don't see why it would be a problem to have them on different pages, seeing as you advocated for separate pages for lists of tripcode/namefield users who preferred the brands. The potential for internet rep-gathering is too great. - guy

*as long as they're contributing information to the wiki I don't actually care much why they're doing it
*point is we just need to make sure to move it to a separate page when the section gets too long and is cluttering the main page.

i think it should be on a separate page from the start, like the "people who like this brand" pages you made. Its essentially the same thing, we don't need to wait for clutter imo - guy

*alright, if you think that's better, I'll get to work on that
Thanks. I only have the interests of the wiki at heart. - guy

*if you check the help section I added a section about how to create an opinions page, so that should work I think. I might change my mind about page titles though. Opinion: brand would probably be better than brand/opinion

i think either is fine tbh

Rancourt & Company is a US-based shoe manufacturer owned by Michael Rancourt. The company was formerly owned by Allen Edmonds, until it was bought back by its previous owners, the Rancourt family. Their website claims that their history in the shoemaking business goes back to 1964.

Rancourt makes primarily made-to-order handsewn shoes and boots. This includes boat shoes, camp-mocs, penny loafers, venetian loafers, tassel loafers, ranger mocs, and both moc-toe and plain-toe boots and chukkas. They offer a variety of leathers at different prices, including many Horween options, such as the popular Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan.

Rancourt has one of the most helpful and comprehensive websites of any made in USA brand. Kyle Rancourt has also done an AMA on Reddit.

All of their shoes are made in Lewiston, Maine.

Subjective: Style and Quality
The style of Rancourt & Company's shoes can easily work with a menswear style or a heritage style, but a conservative choice of handsewn, like a brown boat shoe or a black penny loafer, can bring accusations of "dadcore". On the bright side, their shoes might make an excellent gift for your dad.

The quality of construction is very good, though finishing and attention to detail is somewhat lacking.

When choosing a leather, this editor recommends the standard choice, Chromexcel. This is the second most famous of Horween's leathers (behind the considerably more expensive Shell Cordovan). It is commonly used for handsewn shoes.

Information
Understanding the Trinity
Grandfather Rancourt worked for Quoddy and was a shoemaker. He begat Michael Rancourt.

Michael Rancourt is the owner of Rancourt & Company and has a monotone voice that you can hear in their promotional videos on Vimeo. He begat Kyle Rancourt.

Kyle Rancourt is the public relations for Rancourt & Company on the internet. He is not very good at choosing the right there/their/they're, and likes saying rude things about competitors on Reddit.

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/191560/i_am_kyle_rancourt_of_rancourt_co_shoecrafters_we/c8ju2h8

Trying to attach that link to the text is spitting out errors for me and I can't make it work.

Sizing
The fit is generally true-to-size. You can email them for information about sizing relative to some other brands; their history with Allen Edmonds means they have a good sense of how their lasts compare to Allen Edmonds lasts, so if you know your size in Allen Edmonds you should know your size in Rancourt.

Custom Orders
If you order by email, you can specify a different color or type of leather for any given style, or a different sole. Officially there is supposed to be an online customization tool coming soon, but when that is is uncertain. The fee for custom orders is $50, and this seems to be regardless of how many changes you make to a given stock model.

Stockists
Rancourt makes handsewns for Red Wing Handsewn, Eastland Made in Maine, and a few other brands.

Club Monaco carries a small selection of Rancourt shoes, and Need Supply currently carries two styles (as of 26/05/2013). There may be other stockists not mentioned here.

Price
Rancourt's prices are very similar to Quoddy's and less expensive than Oak Street Bootmakers, making them one of the less expensive varieties of made in the USA handsewn shoes.

/fa/'s Opinion
Rancourt & Co. is not unheard of on /fa/, but it is seldom talked about or worn by posters. When I have seen their penny loafers posted, they are sometimes called dadcore, but not always. Opinions are mixed but mostly pretty neutral. A small handful of posters are fans.

Comparable Brands
Quoddy, Oak Street Bootmakers and Yuketen all make comparable shoes using similar materials and construction techniques.
It sort of requires heaps of dedication and watching so idk, ive never put in the effort myself.

Change the titles or something, I was bored of making bland titles.

No Poo
The ancient method of No Poo functions entirely on black magic. Not for the uninitiated who can't tell the difference between shampooing and just washing your hair.

Go To A Fucking Barber
No matter how awesome and crafty you think you are, never attempt to cut your own hair alone. Learn with a professional if you want to save on salon money, it's well worth it (and then you don't have to go to the salon anyway when you fuck up). Mike is a wizard, do not be led astray by his ways by just watching his video once or twice.

Do not attempt unless you are VERY desperate or okay with looking like a total dork in the learning process.

Self-dyeing
Never dye by yourself. Results in rashes, skin peeling of, etc. Besides, getting an even tone all over is one of the hardest tasks for colourists.

Skin-care Basics
A skin-care regimen is necessary for healthy skin consists of:

Cleanser/Face wash
This cleans your face. duh.

Exfoliator
This removes dead skin and make-up stuck in your pores. Slows aging process.
Entirely optional for men, still recommended though.
Especially if you have blemishes.
You don't want to exfoliate too much though or your skin ends up looking like gritting paper. 2-4 times a week just before sleeping is usually fine.

Moisturizer
This keeps your face moist. duh.

Notes
Apply in the order listed two times a day. After you wake up and before you go to sleep, preferrably.

You can cheap out on cleansers, but try to buy a good moisturizer that matches your skin type.
Always try to avoid alcohol in your face products.

Contrary to popular belief and marketing, women's skincare products do not automatically turn you into a FLAMING HOMOGAY although some of you might want to stay away from tinted and/or scented creams.
But you can alternatively use skincare products for MANLY MEN made out of MOTOR OIL scented with BBQ sauce if you feel like paying the markup those products to preserve your precious HETEROSEXUALITY.

Acne Treatment
Occam's Acne
There is beauty in simplicity with skincare. Wash your face a few times a day with a mild cleanser. Drinking enough water and eating healthy is possibly the best thing you can do for your skin (and body). Sleeping with a clean towel over your pillow each night (or washing your pillowcase weekly) also works wonders. For those whose faces refuse to clear up, consider the following treatments.

Benzoyl Peroxide
Salicylic Acid
Get some SA based cream to exfoliate your skin and cleanse your pores. In case you're a poorfag or in a hurry, put an aspirin on a cotton ball, cup water into hand and lightly soak the pill and cotton. After one minute or so, it should crumble to the lightest touch. Apply to face (specific area), tape with bandage for 1 or 2 hours and it should do the trick. You can also mix crumbled aspirin to different ingredients (honey, milk, coconut oil, etc) and make a full face exfoliating scrub. Google ingredients for desired effects.

When All Else Fails
Talk to a dermatologist if the above suggestions do not work for you. He or she can give you various options. A common solutions to severe cystic acne is accutane. There are also other treatments for other cases of stubborn acne.

Shave That Beard
Or don't, what ever. Some men fit (maybe even need) a beard, and some do not. Just remember beards, like all hair on our body, keeps dirt and oil even closer to our skin. Unless you take care of it and wash it properly, it'll end up like the Amazon Forest: dark, damp, with high chances of encounters with animals.

Miscellaneous
Other shit.
http://www.Levi.com - Large selection of jeans (among other things) in a variety of colors and cuts. The quality is beginner level in their cheaper jeans not made in the USA. Levi's often has sales, so avoid buying at full retail. Avoid if you live outside NA, ridiculous markups.

http://www.riverisland.com/

Here are weird sort of Japanese Ebays but things go crazy cheap here. Talked to heaps of people that have found anything from Yohji Yamamoto to pre-2000s Helmut Lang and MMM for less than $50.
It sort of requires heaps of dedication and watching so idk, ive never put in the effort myself.

They offer a variety of leathers at different prices, including many Horween options, including the popular Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan.

Rancourt has one of the most helpful and comprehensive websites of any made in USA brand. Kyle Rancourt has also done an AMA on Reddit.

All of their shoes are made in Lewiston, Maine.
