Advice
No silhouette is inherently better or worse, but you should always be aware of what you are trying to achieve. Wanting a thin silhouette isn't an excuse for wearing clothes as tight as possible, and wanting a loose silhouette doesn't mean you should look like a slob and wear XL tees.

Hip$ster: Deleted something no longer relevant. This site gets modified so seldom that I'm not sure what the point of it is anymore

This page is about only men's shoes.

This page is under construction. For now, please just don't do it. Check back later and this page will be full of convincing stuff.

How cheap is "cheap"?
There isn't an absolute value, because cheap is relative to what you're looking for in a shoe. As an example of that, a good boat shoe is not as expensive as a good brogue, generally. Moreover, not every brand above any value I could set would necessarily be a great value, or even an acceptable shoe. But generally speaking you should never spend less than $100 on a pair of shoes. There may be rare exceptions to this, but in some styles there certainly aren't. A pair of oxford shoes should generally be much more than that. This is the most asinine thing I've ever read. Kill yourself. <- look at this poorfag, lel

Why do shoes matter?
Why Shoes Matter

Durability
For some styles of shoes, the more expensive shoes are going to last longer. If you are debating inexpensive boots against Red Wing boots, the latter could quite possibly turn out to be a better financial choice by lasting much longer due to better construction. This is also very true in oxford shoes, where full grain leather will last a lot longer than most shoes made with corrected grain, and a good welt will give the shoes a longer lifespan.

Styling
Low-end Sneakers: an exception?
For some people, certain inexpensive canvas and leather sneakers may be appropriate. Buyers should be careful when choosing a pair and play it relatively safe with colors and materials, depending on age.

While these brands are considered okay by many, the durability of their shoes is generally not very good, though some people prefer the appearance of a torn and weathered canvas sneaker.

There are some people who do not think any of these are acceptable choices of shoes. Keep in mind that, especially at a lower price point, it's hard to please everybody.

Converse
Converse is an American sneaker company that formerly made its shoes in the United States but moved its production overseas in the early 2000s to reduce costs and avoid bankruptcy. Their iconic canvas sneakers are instantly recognizable for most normal people. While these will not help you stand out, they may help you pass inspection.

John Varvatos Converse is slightly more expensive than standard converse and comes in a variety of more distressed-looking styles. Some people argue that these look better.

Comme Des Garscon PLAY Converse run aroud $110 US and are frequently disscused on many fashion fourms, these would be seen as acceptable to most aswell

Vans
Vans, like Converse, has its roots in US production, but cut costs by moving production elsewhere in the late nineties. Their shoes are frequently associated with skater culture. Opinions about Vans are mixed. Some maintain that it is a good basic sneaker, and some dismiss it entirely as bro-tier.

Vans has a few different lines of shoes of varying quality and price.
Yuketen is an American shoe brand founded by Yuki Matsuda of Meg Company (with early help from Quoddy) that makes primarily handsewn leather shoes. The brand capitalizes on the large demand for American "heritage" styles in Japan. Their shoes are made similarly to other handsewn brands, but usually with more non-traditional styling. Yuketen does not manufacture all of their shoes themselves; their Johnson shoes and boots are made by Dayton and it is not clear how many of their shoes are made by other American manufacturers.
Stylistically, Yuketen differs from its competitors by its use of less traditional construction and materials. While Yuketen shoes can be traditional in some respects, they usually have one or more unorthodox features. They make use of unusual prints and leathers, colorblocking, mismatched pairs, and other stylistic oddities.

The leather quality is typical compared to other handsewn shoe brands. The overall feel/construction is exceptional.
Sizing
Yuketen's bluchers, boat shoes, and oxford mocs run true-to-size. The Maine Guide boots run large; sizing down a half size should be enough for most people. The Johnson line, made by Dayton, is similar to the sizing of the Alden trubalance last (a full size large), though narrower through the instep.

Price
Yuketen is considerably more expensive than similar handsewn manufacturers. However, Yuketen's products often undergo considerable price reduction in seasonal sales. The Yuketen Maine Guide boot, which normally retails for $550 and upward, generally goes down as low as $250 in sales. So while the brand may not be affordable for many people at MSRP, there are still opportunities to buy Yuketen at a lower price. Handsewn is a word used to denote a variety of moccasin shoes that are sewn by hand, and which are a typically American combination of European and Native American styles. Maine has a relatively large handsewn shoe industry.

Handsewn shoes are made of leather or suede (or, in the case of some really terrible designs, denim) and feature moccasin stitching.

A few r/goodyearwelt posters did some investigation to answer the question of "who makes what" in the US shoe scene. Their conclusion was that "the Maine handsewing industry in particular is a giant incestuous cesspool of contracts and collaborations and more." That thread can be found here.
Quoddy is an American shoe manufacturer that makes all of their handsewn shoes in Maine. They are named after an older brand that made shoes in the US around the 60s, 70s and 80s. That company went out of business; a new company took up the name in the mid-2000s and began making similar shoes to what the original Quoddy made.
Quoddy shoes are typical quality for their price range and style, which is to say pretty good; made in the USA "handsewns" are generally comfortable and durable shoes compared to other styles in the same price range. They typically use Horween leather, which is standard. Quoddy lines many of their shoes with deerskin, which some consider less comfortable than unlined.

Quoddy is a manufacturer; their website has a very limited (and some might say unattractive) array of options, but they make shoes in a variety of styles for stores like Unionmade, SSENSE, Mr Porter, South Willard, Très Bien, KITH NYC, J. Crew, and others.
Yuketen does not manufacture all of their shoes themselves; their Johnson shoes and boots are made by Dayton and how many of their shoes are made by other American manufacturers is not clear.

Subjective: Style and Quality
Stylistically, Yuketen differs from its competitors by its use of less traditional construction and materials. While some Yuketen shoes are made very traditionally in some respects, they usually have a characteristic that sets them apart. They make use of unorthodox prints and leathers, colorblocking, mismatched pairs, and other stylistic oddities.

The leather quality is typical compared to other handsewn shoe brands. The overall feel/construction is exceptional.
Information
Sizing
Yuketen's bluchers, boat shoes, and oxford mocs run true-to-size. The Maine Guide boots run large; sizing down a half size should be enough for most people. Refer to Viberg sizing for the Johnson products, which are made by Viberg (this editor has no experience with that brand and cannot comment; do a google search.)

This editor owns and loves three pairs of Yuketen shoes, all of which were bought well below their original prices.

Shoes

Hip$ster: The brands listed mostly sold casual shoes/boots. Unless the list is modified to include "dress" footwear only, the name of the list should not say that it does.

A pair of dress shoes is essential in any man's wardrobe. While they not seem relevant to your daily wear, eventually you will need a pair--either for work, a wedding, or some other special occasion. If you only own one pair, versatility will be the most important factor. A plain black or brown derby with a rounded toe fits this bill. Thrift stores--often unreliable for much else-- consistently carry dress shoes (some of them very good) for those unwilling to shell out for a new pair. Consider durability and comfort when purchasing, they might last for years.

General Types and Styles of Dress Shoes
Balmorals and Derbies
The two most common styles of men's dress shoes, the Balmoral and Derby are distinguished by their "lacing type," or how the eyelet tabs are stitched in relation to the vamp. Balmorals (also informally called Oxfords) feature a "closed lacing" style in which the eyelet tabs are stitched underneath the vamp. Derbies (also called Bluchers) feature an "open lacing" style in which the eyelet tabs are stitched on top of the vamp. Simply put, the section that holds the eyelets is "on top" on a Derby and "tucked under" on a Balmoral (see picture for details). In general, Derbies are considered more casual than Balmorals.

Also note that while Balmorals may be called "Oxfords", both Derbies and Balmorals are types of oxfords. An oxford is simply any form of laced shoe. This is why certain sneakers may be referred to as oxfords, such as Converse's Core Ox and Sperry's Striper CVO (which stands for Circular Vamp Oxford).

Other Styles
<p style="margin-top:0.4em;margin-bottom:0.5em;">Loafers and Boat Shoes</p>

: Low cut shoes with no or largely nonfunctional laces and typically a moc toe construction. Generally considered more casual than a laced shoe.

Chukka

: An ankle length boot with two or three pairs of eyelets. Worn casually, desert boots are a popular style of chukka.

Bucks

:Generally any suede derby, these shoes were originally made of Brazilian or Chinese deer skin and worn as sport shoes. May be made with suede or nubuck and may feature a brick red sole. Nubuck will tend to make for a more expensive shoe and has a finer, velvety nap.

Monk Strap

: A style of laceless shoe closed with one or two straps and buckles. A monk shoe with two straps may be refered to as a "double monk."

Embellishments
Brogues

: Any shoe or boot with broguing--small decorative perforations, often along with serrations along the visible edges (e.g. along the throat line, toe cap, and tongue). A shoe can simultaneously be a balmoral(or derby) and a pair of "brogues". Due to the functional purpose of broguing, brogues were originally considered a casual <span style="font-size:13px;line-height:21px;">shoe, but this is no longer true. Brogueing can be found on both casual and formal shoes.</span>

: Additionally, there are different terms for the extent and style of broguing: the popular <span style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:sans-serif;font-size:12.800000190734863px;line-height:19.200000762939453px;">full brogue (or wingtip), semi-brogue, quarter brogue, as well as the longwing style.</span>
Cap Toe

: A shoe with an extra layer of material covering the toe of the shoe. There are different styles of toe caps, but generally when a shoe is refered to as "cap toed" it will be a simple cap like the one shown to the right. A toe cap can be found on any type of shoe from dress shoes, to boots, and even sneakers.

Moc Toe
: Short for <span style="color:rgb(68,68,68);font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:small;line-height:12.800000190734863px;">moccasin</span><span style="color:rgb(68,68,68);font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:small;line-height:12.800000190734863px;"> toe</span>, a construction wherein visible seams run along the toe box of a shoe. This owes to the simple construction technique where a 'plug' (the top section of the vamp on a loafer) is sewn to the vamp.

Apron Toe
: Similar to a moc toe, an apron toe is stitching along the toe of the shoe. However, an apron toe is (or simulates) an apron stitched onto the vamp. This usually looks less rough than a moc toe, and results in a shape closer to a plain toe.

</gallery>

Tying & Lacing
Many dress shoes come from the factory laced in such a way that they look nice, but aren't as easy to put on as we'd like.
Here's a diagram for lacing (which will work as well for sneakers and other shoes) in addition to a very quick and efficient form of tying shoe laces called the Ian Knot.

</gallery>

Tying & Lacing
Many dress shoes come from the factory laced in such a way that they look nice, but aren't as easy to put on as we'd like.
Here's a diagram for lacing (which will work as well for sneakers and other shoes) in addition to a very quick and efficient form of tying shoe laces called the Ian Knot.

this is my favourite shoe brand

I own three pairs and that number is only going to go up

edit 15/08/2013: I own four pairs now. I still have good things to say about the brand. I don't know if I'd still call it my favourite, and they are a little bit overrated relative to their american competitors. One of the most important reasons to consider competitors is the customer service side of it: Quoddy, Rancourt, Oak Street Bootmakers, Russell Moccasin, etc. all offer various repair services. Yuketen doesn't say they do (and I would be surprised if they did). The reason is obvious: Yuketen sells mostly to an Asian market. US sales aren't what they're after. Besides that, they have a slightly overblown "legendary quality" reputation and outpace their competitors on the style side of things. So they don't need to offer the same level of support for their product post-production in order to make sales.

As I said, the quality is overrated. It's on par with all the others, although some of their products (like the Maine Guide line of boots) are a little bit more interestingly built (that said, they run a full $100-200 more expensive than the competition). But their basic products, like their chukkas, are virtually identical to their competitor's counterparts (like an unlined Quoddy chukka; I say this having tried both). That said, the pricing comes closer to standard on those products.

I don't know who makes Yuketen's shoes. I haven't been able to find someone who does. I know that Viberg makes their Johnson line, I know they have collaborated with Paraboot for some shoes that are easily identifiable as Paraboot. I don't know who makes their shoes in Mexico, and I don't know who makes their shoes in the US. Yuketen isn't exactly transparent about these things. It always struck me as odd that they never called their Johnson boots "Yuketen X Viberg" or anything to that effect (considering Viberg's fantastic reputation). I suspect the reason is that they wouldn't want to announce who they're working with for every shoe. I also suspect that they make very few of their offerings themselves, if any.

The biggest reason to buy Yuketen is that the sale prices are good. You can say the same thing of Quoddy, but you can't say it of Oak Street Bootmakers. Yuketen keeps a very good stockists page, just keep up with all of them throughout the season and watch for when the price drops. I've bought all four of mine from different retailers during end-of-season sales; the closest to full price I ever paid was 30% off.

It always struck me as odd that they never called their Johnson boots "Yuketen X Viberg" or anything to that effect.

I've bought all four of mine from different retailers during end-of-season sales; the closest to full price I ever paid was 30% off.

this is my favourite shoe brand

It's on par with all the others, and some of their products (like the Maine Guide line of boots) are a little bit more structurally complex.

Whoever edited the style section: Good job.
-----
This looks like a messy wall of text. Divide it into sections based on what each bit is trying to express, I think. Having random phrases in bold and allcaps looks obnoxious and lame, also. there are other ways to emphasize individual ideas.

----

tl;dr - Anon

I really thought that this wiki needed some posting guidelines. Remember, this is a board sticky, not just an info wiki. Added the following to the intro page, though I thought it might do better with it's own page in the navigation bar, for more visibility. Of course this is just my take. Everything is up for discussion. Not everyone will follow these, but I really think that if we go these guidelines out there /fa/ would become a much better place.

-----
Telling new posters to post in the WAYWT threads is not a good idea. They're getting criticism, which is good. But we're forgetting a few things:

- First, the WAYWT crowd is only one fraction of the board, and the criticism you will receive is not representative of all users. Posting there for criticism will end up pushing your taste in the direction of being similar to the others who post in WAYWT threads.

- Harsh criticism tends to push people new to fashion in the direction of being as safe as possible and being afraid of bold or divisive pieces. Being exposed to negativity early-on can slow the development of their own sense of style.

- Posts in the WAYWT threads reflect on the board. Example: people go to MFA, see bad fits, and then determine that MFA is unfashionable. People will do the same with /fa/ when they see all the newcomers posting basic fits. This can be a deterrent to new posters as well, because they see the WAYWT and then think it's the wrong board to ask for advice.

- Once they're in the thread, and they post their fit, what are they going to do while they wait for responses? They're going to comment on other people's fits. Herding the newcomers into the WAYWT threads could create a low-experience board subculture where people with no knowledge give advice to other people with no knowledge. That is NOT what we want happening.

What we need to encourage for newcomers is to be transparent at all times, and accept that it is always the case that the opinion you start with in fashion will not be the opinion you end with. It's a learning experience for every person who gets into it. Don't make defiant purchases ("they all hate it, but I love it, so fuck them!") and don't give people feedback until you are more qualified to do so.

Levis produces clothing at different price points to accommodate different consumers. Made & Crafted, Vintage, and some of the higher end Mainline jeans are really the only "properly" good jeans Levi's produces.

Levi's Signature: Produced for discount retailers Walmart, in the U.S. and Canada, and Kmart, Shopko, Blain’s Farm & Fleet, Hamrick’s and Meijer in the U.S. all priced at under $25; straight line on pocket

dENiZEN: Exclusively for Target 6 fits, 22 finishes

Levi's Made for Outlet: Carried at outlets and lower end retailers like Kohl's. Quality is generally poor

Levi's Mainline: "Normal" Levi's, carried at Levi's mainline stores and mid level retailers like Macy's. Denim is usually decent, but seaming is sometimes questionable, just like everything at this price range

Levi's Made and Crafted: Bridge line of sorts, carried at major mainline stores and certain major retailers like Neiman Marcus. Quality is good. Where to Shop

Levi's Vintage Clothing: High end reproduction of vintage garments and new garments inspired by vintage pieces. Also repduces specific historical jeans. Very good quality, carried at only a few flagships (Union Square in SF, Beverly Hills, and Times Square) and high end department stores like Barney's, Saks, etc. See Where to Shop.
Warning: The pictures on Levi's main site are notorious for misrepresenting how the jeans actually fit. Generally recommended fits include the 511, 510, 514, and 501, and less commonly the 513 and 508. Avoid bootcuts and "relaxed" fits.

510 Skinny Fit - Mid rise (10"). Skinniest fit, slim through seat and thigh, all the way down to ankle. 13.5” leg opening. Only for those with slim legs and thighs.

511 Slim Fit - Low rise (9"), slim through thigh with a slightly tapered leg. 14.5” leg opening. The most commonly recommended cut of Levis.

513 Slim Straight - Mid rise (10.5"), slim leg. Slimmer than 514 with a higher rise. 15" leg opening.

508 Regular Taper (formerly 521) Mid rise (11.5"), slim fit, tapered leg, more room in the seat than the 513, 14"opening. Recommended by /fit/ fags who have THIGHS BIGGER THAN YOUR HEAD
Frank & Oak is a vertically integrated online menswear brand with premium threads and a simple, integrated, and personalized shopping experience. The Montreal based brand deals almost exclusively in a Traditional clothing style, or what is generally referred to as "Men's Wear". Launched in February of 2012, Frank & Oak's goal is to provide quality Men's Wear at an acceptable price. Through a small in house design team and outsourced labour, Frank & Oak is able to keep costs fairly low while providing usable, quality products.

One of the more unique aspects of Frank & Oak is the fact that a new collection is released every month. This means that each piece is produced in very small quantities thus making it difficult to purchase the more popular items.

Membership
Frank & Oak, like many online only retailers, requires that a customer becomes a member to view their products. A unique membership type called the Hunt Club allows customers to order a Hunt Club Crate which is shipped at no charge. Filled 3 pieces from the month's new collection, the Hunt Club Partner is then expected to try each piece to find if he likes them or not, then simply ship the crate back and pay for what he keeps.
User Opinions
SWR I dig some of their stuff. I'm not a Hunt Club member simply because I don't buy from F&O enough to warrant something like that, but I do like what I have purchased from there. I don't really wear it much though. The oxfords are probably my favorite thing they sell. The sweaters feel thin, but that's to be expected. In general, it's a good place to pick up some mens wear basics. I'm also fairly tall and the tops fit me fine.
Solid boots that are made to last. If you have large feet or twig legs the 'silhouette' might not do you any favours. Still, for people with normal-size or small feet, it's hard to beat them at their price point. Their shoes are not quite as nice as their boots; I don't mean that anything is very different, the two are very similar, I just think the formula doesn't work as well for their shoes. Also, I have some of their oxblood oxfords, and I'm not happy with the moc toe on them, it doesn't actually seem to be moccasin stitching. It's weird, I don't like that. Got them on sale though and they're nice enough shoes. Anyway, their boots come highly recommended from me, just remember to be careful about sizing. The boots are very long and a bit wide; my feet are like a 10 in width and a 9.5 in length (US), I take a 9.5 which fits me in width but is a bit too long. I know someone who also wears a 9.5 whose feet are a pretty standard 10.

The review Boris posted mentioned one thing I forgot to add, and I'll just add my voice to his on this one: the leather insole is extremely stiff (actually, the whole boot/shoe is pretty stiff) out of the box, but gets better as you break it in. The break-in period is a little bit painful but has a happy ending.

Boris
Bought a pair because I heard good things about Red Wing, so I made my way to the local Red Wing shop. I was surprised at the price they charged, but I bought a pair of the 875s cause I thought the color was beautiful. Sure, there are those who complain about the "clown silhouette", but those who complain about them are usually skinny twinks. As long as its all proportional to your body. The first few wears will always be painful, because of the leather insoles, but once you have them broken in, they'll be the most comfortable boots you'll wear in your lifetime.

Oak Street Bootmakers is a relatively new American shoe manufacturer founded by George Vlagos ("son of a cobbler", of course) that makes primarily handsewn shoes, and makes most of its shoes in Chicago (the exception, the trench boot, is made in New York). Oak Street Bootmakers make most of their shoes with Horween Chromexcel leather, the original pull-up aniline leather, which is still made in the Horween factory in Chicago. Chromexcel is used by most manufacturers of high-quality handsewn shoes, with good reason.

Oak Street Bootmakers' primary competitors are Quoddy, Rancourt & Co., and the more expensive Yuketen.

Their shoes are not made-to-order, so they will ship to you pretty quickly.

Subjective: Style and Quality
Oak Street Bootmakers have an edge over their competitors in website design, and are the undisputed masters of taking flattering photos of their own products. That said, their products do measure up very well to the competition. The construction is good, and the comfort is excellent. While the array of colors and leathers is pretty limited, the options available are all very tasteful, if a little conservative. These make for very good basic handsewn shoes and boots.

Even their competitor Kyle Rancourt, who managed to say nothing nice about Quoddy, had to admit that Oak Street Bootmakers know what they're doing.

Information
Sizing
Their shoes run true to size, their boots run a half size large. Their website offers sizing tips for each shoe. This editor can say from experience that the camp boot runs a bit large but is still totally wearable if you order your regular size.

Price
Oak Street Bootmakers are slightly more expensive than their competitors Quoddy and Rancourt & Co. While Rancourt offers their "Clymer" moc for $265, Oak Street Bootmakers offer their nearly-identical "Trail Oxford" for $296. In fairness, Rancourt's Clymer moc debuted after Oak Street Bootmakers were peaking in popularity. I'll leave that thought with you.

Shoes made for other retailers
While Oak Street Bootmakers don't seem to be going overboard with the exclusive shoes for retailers, they have made a few to this editor's knowledge. The first is the black version of the Trench boot made exclusively for Context. The second is a black bison leather chukka with a ripple sole for Need Supply. The third is a peanut suede trail oxford with a brick camp sole for Independence Chicago. The Toronto stockist Lost & Found offer a few unique models.

/fa/'s Opinion
While you could get called a dad by wearing these with a #menswear fit, generally good things are said about Oak Street Bootmakers when mentioned. The brand is not terribly popular, but it is not unknown or unpopular, either.

Yuketen does not manufacture all of their shoes themselves; their Johnson shoes and boots are made by Viberg and how many of their shoes are made by other American manufacturers is not clear.

Subjective: Style and Quality
Stylistically, Yuketen differs from its competitors by its use of less traditional construction and materials. While some Yuketen shoes are made very traditionally in some respect, they usually have a characteristic that sets them apart. They make use of unorthodox prints and leathers, colorblocking, mismatched pairs, and other stylistic oddities.

The leather quality is typical compared to other handsewn shoe brands. The overall feel/construction is exceptional.

[ View user opinions.]

Information

This editor owns and loves three pairs of Yuketen shoes, all of which were bought well below their original prices.

Yuketen is not unpopular on /fa/ but it's not one of the more popular shoe brands, either. Generally it does not draw criticism and some posters are vocal fans.
|Goodyear Welt
|The Goodyear welt process is the traditional method for the manufacture of men's dress shoes, taking its name from the inventor who devised the original machine to replace the earlier completely hand sewn method. The benefit of a dress shoe which is made using the Goodyear welt construction is that the shoe can be resoled repeatedly, giving the shoe a lifespan of years, sometimes even decades. Some claims towards added ventilation have been made as well but there are no proven studies comparing the breathability of different shoe construction methods. Most probably the materials play the largest part in the ventilation issue.

Essentially, the upper part of the dress shoe is shaped over the last and fastened on by sewing a leather, linen or synthetic strip (also known as the "welt") to the inner and upper sole. As well as using a welt, a thread is used to hold the material firmly together.

The welt forms a cavity which is then filled with a cork material. The final part of the shoe is the sole which is attached to the welt of the shoe by some combination of stitching along the edge of the welt and sole, and a high strength adhesive like contact cement or hide glue. The Goodyear welt is highly regarded for a number of reasons including being relatively waterproof by not allowing water to get into the insole due to the welt-sole construction, the relative ease in which the sole can be replaced, and the fact that the shoe can last up to 20 years or longer depending on the treatment and condition of the upper.

Information

This editor owns and loves three pairs of Yuketen shoes, all of which were bought well below their original prices.

/fa/'s Opinion
Yuketen is not unpopular on /fa/ but it's not one of the more popular shoe brands, either. Generally it does not draw criticism and some posters are vocal fans.
A.P.C is a French store with branches across the world, founded in 1988 by the Tunisian-Jewish born Designer Jean Touitou. A.P.C. stands for 'Atelier de Production et de Création'. The typical A.P.C. look is classically French - minimally preppy, slim-fitting, and would look equally at home in the 60s and today.

Denim
A.P.C. is famous for its raw denim. There has been recent controversy about the quality of the denim, which has shifted manufacturing country.CN Their jeans come in a variety of fits (in rough order from skinniest to loosest):
*Cure
*Petit Standard
*Petit New Standard
*New Standard
*New Cure
*Rescue
